Yunior had a girlfriend, Paloma, who lived a busy life having to take care of her family, but when she said no to something, Yunior did not really care. In “Miss Lora” readers can see how Yunior sexualizes women and seeks interested in them, without seeing consequences that can be faced.
Yunior does everything he can to not blame himself for what he did, showing he had no respect for women, and after he was out of the relationship as time went by, he started to realize the choices he makes and the effects they have. When Yunor’s fiancée found him cheating he began blaming it on other things, “You try every trick in the book to keep her…You compose a mass e-mail disowning all your sucias. He thought to himself that if he made a mistake it was no big deal, but because he made the choice to cheat he would have to face the consequences. Yunior did not see himself to be in the wrong for cheating on his fiancée. Yunior did not care how his ex-fiancée had felt when it first happened, for he was living his best life when he had his perfect fiancée and was emailing other women at the same time. Another common theme is sexism, though it is not necessarily found in the story itself but is really the character that the story focuses on.Īn example of the sexism can be found in “A Cheaters Guide to Love”, which starts out with the main character (who is brought up in many other short stories) Yunior found cheating on his fiancée. One common theme throughout many of his short stories is the perspective of Yunior being an immigrant from the Dominican Republic and being faced with many challenges in the United States. He is a man that immigrated from the Dominican Republic to the United States, and in the stories, we can understand the type of person Yunior is. Yunior is the main character that can be found through many of Diaz’s short stories. Along with the journey of moving to the United States and trying to fit in by living the American Dream.
Where some of his short stories can be found is in, Drown, this collection has ten short stories in it all around the concepts of Dominican immigrants. He has won a Pulitzer prize, Anisfield-Wolf Book award, John Sargent Sr. Diaz’s first published his short stories in the late 1990’s to early 2000. Junot Diaz is one of many short story writers, along with a few books on the side. Yunior is the main character in Diaz’s short stories, he can be seen as his alter ego. Not many people say they do or have alter egos, but Junot Diaz does.
